First Watch by Peter Hansen
eBook release:  Oct 30 2011
Heat Wave: 4 - On-screen, mildly explicit love scenes
Erotic Frequency: 3 - Moderate
Type: Part of a Series
BlurbDo you want to live? In the darkness of a WWI battlefield, young Legionnaire Edouard Montreuil lies dying. As teeth nibble his flesh, a voice whispers, Do you want to live? Frightened and desperate, Edouard bargains his freedom for a second chance.
Aboard the Flèche, a grim submarine captained by the nightmare who granted Edouard new life, Edouard pays the price for his survival. Each night, he gives his body to his captain as the bells sound first watch. But surviving is not living, and as the days stretch into months beneath the waves, Edouard grows desperate for escape.
Can Edouard’s old comrade Farid Ruiz help him break this devil's bargain, or will Ruiz fall to the same fate, trapped beneath the waves at the mercy of a monster whose hunger knows no bounds? Edouard and Ruiz served together once before, and slept together too, but courage and passion failed to save them from the eldritch beasts who roamed the night. This time, the cost of failure is nothing so clean or simple as death, and the spoils of victory are not just life, but love.
Rachel Haimowitz talks First Watch

I knew Peter from a different pen name (which, sadly, I cannot reveal)—a beautiful fantasy novel that earned a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly. When we started Riptide, he was one of the first authors we contacted; both Aleks and myself were exceptionally eager to work with him. What struck me—and what I think will strike you—first and foremost about Peter is his mastery of prose. His writing is literary, but without pretension. Beautifully rhythmic and musical, but without unnecessary flourish. He brings a certain spare beauty to everything, a way of looking at and writing about the world and the human condition that is, frankly, awe-inspiring. He gives me prose envy; one day I hope I can learn to construct even a single sentence as beautiful as the ones he fills his whole manuscript with.

And therein lies something of an interesting dichotomy, because he’s written tentacle porn J What he managed to do, though, was craft a chill-inducing horror story wrapped around a very sort of masculine romance between two old friends, long gone from each other. It’s not “squicky” at all—there’s no gratuitous detail, and while it may make your skin crawl, it does so in the best possible way. First Watch defies whatever sort of convention people might have about tentacle stories, which are mostly rooted in the Yaoi tradition but in First Watch are rooted in Lovecraftian horror.

All told, I simply can’t speak highly enough about this book or this writer. The story’s fantastic—it’s creepy, evocative, just plain beautiful, and will hit buttons you never even knew you had. Peter is a genius—and I don’t use that word lightly—and when he’s collecting his Man Booker in ten years, I hope to be there applauding him like the proud mama editor I am.

  2. This sounds Lovecraftian! Color me intrigued. Also, great cover.

  3. Very much so. It's basically the 1920s as we know it, except eldritch horrors roam the land. And sometimes the air and the sea, too. Which may or may not be how our hero finds himself on a submarine wrapped in tentacles ;-)

@SueM: I posted an excerpt? (LOL sorry, there's been so much going on, I can't keep track of what has and hasn't happened yet; where's the excerpt up?) But trust me, you won't be disappointed. Peter is AMAZING.

  10. @Andrea @the_wuss In LOVE with this cover. Unlike Amara, I'm not avoiding those tentacles at all. ;)

@SueM @Rachel Look, ma! I'm in the news! Any chance of getting myself hooked up with that newsletter? Purely vanity. :D

@Sarah It was a fun little book for me to write. Here's hoping you enjoy it as much as I did!

  12. At first glance, this isn't a book I'd pick up to read but you've talked me into putting it onto my 'to read' list!

Can I just check - commenters seem to be including their e-mail addresses in the comment. Is this really necessary, I thought that if signed in with a Google or Blogger account, then you could automatically see the commenter's e-mail address. is this not the case?

  13. Good morning everyone :)

@Rachel: You guys have a newsletter subscription box here too. Over thar on the sidebar.

@Nithu: Hi Nithu. Nope, can't see all of them. If people have included their email in their blogger profile I can send them an email thru that, but not everyone does. If you were to win right now... I'd have no way to know how to get a hold of you. If you'd rather not leave you email on blog, I totally understand, if you'd like to you can shoot me a private email so I have it for the giveaway announcements. 26. So, every time I see that cover, I think "Tentacles so aren't my thing," but then I read the blurb and the snippet in the newsletter and reconsidered.

Not that tentacles are my thing, but it's a very interesting and dark premise, and I'm very curious to see where it goes.

  27. Wow, this looks like an amazing story. Definitely going to be on the look out for it.

    Congrats on the grand opening!

  30. This is SO my cuppa! And has a breathtaking cover, to boot.

I've been addicted to horror fic since childhood, and a lover of gorgeous prose since adolescence, and a fan of m/m romance since I entered...well, not quite my dotage but, let's say, "advanced adulthood," so I'll eagerly be awaiting this release!

    ReplyDelete
  31. BTW, where are the stories' excerpts, Rachel? In the newsletter only?

    ReplyDelete
  32. The cover is absolutely beautiful! And I don't mind the tentacles on the cover one bit. Makes for a very interesting atmosphere...

I haven't read much dark books at all, but the blurb is fantastic.

I'd love to be entered in the drawing. :)
