First Watch by Peter Hansen
eBook release:  Oct 30 2011
Heat Wave: 4 - On-screen, mildly explicit love scenes
Erotic Frequency: 3 - Moderate
Type: Part of a Series
BlurbDo you want to live? In the darkness of a WWI battlefield, young Legionnaire Edouard Montreuil lies dying. As teeth nibble his flesh, a voice whispers, Do you want to live? Frightened and desperate, Edouard bargains his freedom for a second chance.
Aboard the Flèche, a grim submarine captained by the nightmare who granted Edouard new life, Edouard pays the price for his survival. Each night, he gives his body to his captain as the bells sound first watch. But surviving is not living, and as the days stretch into months beneath the waves, Edouard grows desperate for escape.
Can Edouard’s old comrade Farid Ruiz help him break this devil's bargain, or will Ruiz fall to the same fate, trapped beneath the waves at the mercy of a monster whose hunger knows no bounds? Edouard and Ruiz served together once before, and slept together too, but courage and passion failed to save them from the eldritch beasts who roamed the night. This time, the cost of failure is nothing so clean or simple as death, and the spoils of victory are not just life, but love.
Rachel Haimowitz talks First Watch

I knew Peter from a different pen name (which, sadly, I cannot reveal)—a beautiful fantasy novel that earned a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly. When we started Riptide, he was one of the first authors we contacted; both Aleks and myself were exceptionally eager to work with him. What struck me—and what I think will strike you—first and foremost about Peter is his mastery of prose. His writing is literary, but without pretension. Beautifully rhythmic and musical, but without unnecessary flourish. He brings a certain spare beauty to everything, a way of looking at and writing about the world and the human condition that is, frankly, awe-inspiring. He gives me prose envy; one day I hope I can learn to construct even a single sentence as beautiful as the ones he fills his whole manuscript with.

And therein lies something of an interesting dichotomy, because he’s written tentacle porn J What he managed to do, though, was craft a chill-inducing horror story wrapped around a very sort of masculine romance between two old friends, long gone from each other. It’s not “squicky” at all—there’s no gratuitous detail, and while it may make your skin crawl, it does so in the best possible way. First Watch defies whatever sort of convention people might have about tentacle stories, which are mostly rooted in the Yaoi tradition but in First Watch are rooted in Lovecraftian horror.

All told, I simply can’t speak highly enough about this book or this writer. The story’s fantastic—it’s creepy, evocative, just plain beautiful, and will hit buttons you never even knew you had. Peter is a genius—and I don’t use that word lightly—and when he’s collecting his Man Booker in ten years, I hope to be there applauding him like the proud mama editor I am.

Before I run off, I wanted to say a hugeamous thank you sooooo vera much to everyone who came by for the first day's celebration. I was sooooo nervous yesterday but you all rocked my socks. If you were unable to make it, you can find Rachel and Andrea's Pretty Monster post linked over there on the sidebar where I'll be linking as we go, as well as on the special Riptide page I made that's linked up there on the menu. Links-a-plenty :D

Thanks also to Rachel and Peter for visiting my blog today. You rock my socks too.

Special party spotlight addition:
I made a special spotlight page to feature the First Watch excerpt from the Riptide newsletter for those that may have missed it.

You can find it here.

  1. Good morning--er, middle of the night?--everyone :) Looking forward to another fun day with ya'all, and thanks again to Amara for making it happen!

  2. This sounds Lovecraftian! Color me intrigued. Also, great cover.

  3. Very much so. It's basically the 1920s as we know it, except eldritch horrors roam the land. And sometimes the air and the sea, too. Which may or may not be how our hero finds himself on a submarine wrapped in tentacles ;-)

  4. This book sounds great. Raceal you have sold me on this story :-D

  5. This is one of the books that I've really been hanging out for! It's definitely on my wish list and Rachel, the excerpt you posted was just cruel! Not very nice to draw us all in the leave us hanging, lol! So please count me in for this one. BTW, Amara? Thanks again for being a wonderful host.
*joins Amara in the snoopy dance*

  6. @Sarah: Glad to hear it, and thanks for stopping by! :D

@SueM: I posted an excerpt? (LOL sorry, there's been so much going on, I can't keep track of what has and hasn't happened yet; where's the excerpt up?) But trust me, you won't be disappointed. Peter is AMAZING.

  7. @SueM: OH! Wait, you mean in the newsletter, right? *feels smart* :D LOL yeah, that did end in kind of a cruel place >:D

  8. I'm looking forward to this one too, I'm such a slut for a good cover and blurb. Plus I'm always keen to be part of a competition for goodies!

    wusswoo at gmail dot com

  9. @Rachel - lol! Sounds like things are kind of hectic for you! Yes, it was the newsletter, so you know at least one person has read it, lol!

@Amara - being the drongo (some Aussie slang for you ;) ), I've done it again.... Too busy dancing I think!

    My email is susan(dot)main(at)yahoo(dot)com(dot)au

  10. @Andrea @the_wuss In LOVE with this cover. Unlike Amara, I'm not avoiding those tentacles at all. ;)

@SueM @Rachel Look, ma! I'm in the news! Any chance of getting myself hooked up with that newsletter? Purely vanity. :D

@Sarah It was a fun little book for me to write. Here's hoping you enjoy it as much as I did!

  11. Indeed. Newsletter is here:

Subscribe and you'll get them direct from now on ;)

  12. At first glance, this isn't a book I'd pick up to read but you've talked me into putting it onto my 'to read' list!

Can I just check - commenters seem to be including their e-mail addresses in the comment. Is this really necessary, I thought that if signed in with a Google or Blogger account, then you could automatically see the commenter's e-mail address. is this not the case?

  13. Good morning everyone :)

@Rachel: Tis totally my pleasure, I'm super excited that I get to play blog with you guys. :D

@Sarah: Hi Sarah, thanks for coming. :)

@Sue: Awwww, you're welcome. And thank YOU :D I'm glad you're enjoying the party. *snoopy dances with you*

    @Rachel: *laughs at you*

@wusswoo: Hi! Thanks for coming :)

  14. @Sue: LOL totally understandable. Thanks for the slang, I'll prolly use that someday :D

@Peter: *waves* Hi Peter! *whispers* the tentacle frighten me. They have mouths and stuff. ;-p

@Rachel: You guys have a newsletter subscription box here too. Over thar on the sidebar.

@Nithu: Hi Nithu. Nope, can't see all of them. If people have included their email in their blogger profile I can send them an email thru that, but not everyone does. If you were to win right now... I'd have no way to know how to get a hold of you. If you'd rather not leave you email on blog, I totally understand, if you'd like to you can shoot me a private email so I have it for the giveaway announcements. You can reach me at amara (at) mambazlair (dot) com.

  15. (This might be a double post, I apologize if it is.)

I would like to be entered into the contest, please.

I love the cover and the blurb has me hooked. October 30th will not get here soon enough for me!

  17. That book looks mad interesting! Enter me ^__^

  18. Hi Everyone,

I can tell you that this book is, phew, wonderful. Peter has such a wonderful way of saying things and as hesitant as I was, never having read such things, LOL, I loved it and have told Peter so.

Pre-orders will be available on October 1. Check out our FAQ for the contest involving pre-orders.

  19. Hmm, that FAQ link didn't seem to work for some reason, but here's the info:

On October 1, we'll be opening our web store for pre-orders. For each book you pre-order directly through our site, you'll receive one entry into a drawing to win free books for a year! There are second and third prizes, too:

*First Prize is one free copy of every single ebook Riptide releases in 2012!

*Second Prize is one free copy of every single ebook Riptide releases between January 1 and June 30, 2012!

*Third Prize is one free copy of every single ebook Riptide releases between January 1 and March 31, 2012!

That's a lot of free books! We'll draw winners at random right after the New Year, so even books you pre-order in December will earn you entries into the contest. And even if you don't win, you still get a nifty bonus: pre-ordered books are available for download two full days before their official sale date!

  20. *snatches that to include on my special Riptide page I'm working on*

  21. I am really looking forward to this book also. I can't wait for Riptide to be up and running so I can be up and ordering *grin* Thanks Amara for hosting. I am enjoying looking into the books that are coming.

  22. I'm very excited about everything going on with Riptide and would love to be entered for a chance to win. Thanks!

  23. It's remotely possible I should consider getting up earlier on the weekend & fighting the DH for his laptop...

Enjoyed the excerpt in the newsletter (count one more who actually reads those!) so I'm kind of looking forward to maybe one day managing to read it.

  24. How very tempting you have made tentacles!
Let me at it.. and please enter me in the contest.. I'm a day late and a dollar short but I'll pop over and check out the 'Monsters' next.

  25. Love the "glittery" gorgeous cover, tentacles and all! Can't wait to read this. =)

    adara adaraohare com

  26. So, every time I see that cover, I think "Tentacles so aren't my thing," but then I read the blurb and the snippet in the newsletter and reconsidered.

Not that tentacles are my thing, but it's a very interesting and dark premise, and I'm very curious to see where it goes.

  27. Wow, this looks like an amazing story. Definitely going to be on the look out for it.

    Congrats on the grand opening!

  28. Hi everyone! *passes party favors*

@booklover: Inorite? I'm so excited for 10/30 I can almost taste it. lol.

    @Nithu: Thank you :)

@maderr: Thanks for coming by :)

    @Chris: *waves* Hi Chris :D

@Tiffany: You're so vera welcome. Thank YOU for coming to the party. I'm so happy that you like it so far. That's awesome. Makes me smile big :D :D

@Wendy: Thank you so much for coming by :)

@Tracykitn: *waves* Hey you! I'm so glad you came by. :D

    @CAS: Lol inorite? Tempting indeed.

@Adara: Isn't that just awesome?! I love this cover. LOVE.

@Alex: LOLOL. Don't tell anyone, but... *whispers* tentacles aren't my thing either. BUT... OMG, my grabby little hands are all OVER this one. I've never been so excited for tentacleporn. Never EVER.

Thanks so much for coming by everyone. You guys all rock tough. Hope you are all having a great Saturday! :D

  30. This is SO my cuppa! And has a breathtaking cover, to boot.

I've been addicted to horror fic since childhood, and a lover of gorgeous prose since adolescence, and a fan of m/m romance since I entered...well, not quite my dotage but, let's say, "advanced adulthood," so I'll eagerly be awaiting this release!

  31. BTW, where are the stories' excerpts, Rachel? In the newsletter only?

  32. The cover is absolutely beautiful! And I don't mind the tentacles on the cover one bit. Makes for a very interesting atmosphere...

I haven't read much dark books at all, but the blurb is fantastic.

I'd love to be entered in the drawing. :)

    beatrice.g.tan [at] gmail [dot] com

  33. Saw most of the covers from the posts Chris sent me.

They all sound like amazing books!

Congrats to Rachael, Aleks, and team!

  34. It's flattering how many of you are saying, "I usually wouldn't read a book like this, but why the hell not." ;) You guuuuys, you're gonna swell my head!

  35. Sounds creepy as hell. So, of course, I WANT IT. lolol

Congrats on the bk, Peter, in case I've failed to say so thus far. This one sounds soooooooooooo full of awesome.

  40. @K.Z. This sounds right up your alley, then! I went through a similar progression in my tastes. ;)

    @Kari Awww, thank you.

@Beatrice, Michael, Brenda, and Bookwyrm369: Riptide has an incredibly talented team of cover artists! I haven't seen a bad cover yet in their lineup, although I've got a soft spot for my own. :D

  41. Beautiful cover. And the story seems interesting. Congratulations Peter.

  42. OMG!! I am SOOOO freaking Excited to read this one!! The cover was just... *___* YUM! <3 lol...

  45. Hi again everyone.

I just made a special page with the First Watch excerpt from the Riptide newsletter for those of you that may have missed it. It's linked up there on the menu, or you can get there from here...

    First Watch Excerpt

  46. That cover is eye-catching and the blurb (and the excerpt) definitely have my attention. Can't wait until the pre-orders are available.

  47. The cover is really gorgeous and the blurb looks good.

Since this is part of a series, would it be a trilogy or.....?

  48. @moniqee At least one sequel, possibly a trilogy if I can get Rachel on board. The next story will take the survivors of "First Watch" through the Spanish Civil War. Thank you for asking!

  49. @Peter: *makes grabby hands* wants WANTS MUCH :D

  50. Hi Loveless, Amanda and moniqee! Thanks so much for coming by today :D

  51. If this book lives up to its book cover, I am going to be one happy reader! Please throw my name into the magical random drawer thingy....

  54. Thank you for the information, Peter. I really had to know if it is trilogy or least to keep my expectation once I read this story.

  55. The cover on this one is so cool I had it on my want to read list before we ever had a Blurb. Now that I have seen the Burb and read the sneak peak I want it even more.

  56. I've never read a tentacle story, but this sound interesting and the cover is so evocative.

  57. *waves* Hiya msmjb65, LCF, SusieQ, moniqee, Mickie and Maria. :D

    Thanks for coming!

    Thanks for playing everyone!!!
