Riptide Party Day 4: Aleksandr Voinov talks Sucks & Blows by Storm Grant

What a fun little gem this one is going to be. One of the things I'm so excited about with Riptide is the variety they are going to provide. So far, in only 4 days, we've seen humorous zombies at quick-marts, Lovecraftian tentacleporn, BDSM, and now... vampires at the dentist...?

Love it.

Today, Aleks is back to talk about Storm Grant and her short story Sucks & Blows.  Without a lot of rambling on my part, I will just step aside with a big warm welcome to Storm...welcome to my Place m'dear. :)

And a big ...welcome back Aleks. :)

eBook release: Oct 30 2011
Word count: 4,500
Page count: 19
Heat Wave: 4 - On-screen, mildly explicit love scenes
Erotic Frequency: 2 - Not many
Type: Standalone
Blurb: Deeply in debt to a loan shark, oversexed dentist Cary Drewel lives in fear of foreclosure and bodily harm. His new practice is missing one rather crucial element: patients. Which, terrifyingly enough, is the one thing his creditors also don’t have.
Pierce Sharpe, a powerful vampire with a drinking problem—or, more accurately, a problem drinking—can’t feed through the pain in his damaged eye teeth. In danger of losing his standing in the vampire community, Pierce seeks Cary's dental services. When Cary extracts his canines, Pierce must turn to other bodily fluids for sustenance.
Together, Cary and Pierce find a mutually pleasurable solution to both their problems. Turns out, though, there’s more to this dentist-patient relationship than simple suction, and what began with raw hunger from each of them might just end in love.

Aleksandr Voinov discusses Sucks & Blows by Storm Grant

Storm Grant’s Sucks & Blows is our first reprint, and was a bit of an opportunistic acquisition, as in, I saw Storm tweet that her original contract with Torquere had run out, so there was clearly an opportunity to get our hands on a piece of writing from her. (Yes, we acquire books via Twitter – can’t say we’re not embracing social media!)

I’ve been in contact with Storm for something like three or four years now (an eternity on the internet in any case), and I really enjoyed her novel Gym Dandy, which features her trademark quirky humour and the puns she delivers so well. Hence, once Sucks & Blows became available, I asked her if she might be interested. I already knew she was funny, I had her on the list of authors I enjoy and hoped to acquire for Riptide, and she was so gracious to send me the story even though we didn’t really have a website yet and Riptide at that point was nothing but a very excited pitch.

Once I read the story, I knew it was a winner. Lots of people say they write humour, but few actually make me laugh.  So when a writer manages to make me laugh out loud on the tube during my commute, I know I want the story. The humour really works on two sides – you get the quick puns you just didn’t see coming and the sitcom element of over-the-topness (I mean, a vampire at the dentist? What’s not to love?). As the story had already been published, we looked at it with fresh eyes and gave it a little guidance on the pacing level, but it came together very nicely and beautifully (and a fair bit longer than the original as a bonus).

And the greatest thing is – based on her experiences with us, Storm is getting ready to submit another story to us called Few are Chosen. Can’t wait to get my hands on that one!

Today’s Giveaway…

Choice of Storm Grant’s Shift Happens, Gym Dandy, or Tart &Soul.

The fine details...

NOTE: It seems blogger is getting all wonky on me again. If you have any problems commenting and entering the giveaway, shoot me an email at amara(at)mambazlair(dot)com and I'll enter you that way and post comments to Aleks and Storm if and when it'll let me. Sorry guys.

  1. This sounds great. I didn't read the original so looking forward to picking up the revised version

  3. I need more humor in my life! (No,really!) and now I have to skedaddle; it's almost bus time!

    (WV: bucrynd *waaaahhahah*)

  4. I really enjoyed writing a "pretend" blurb for this one over at qoodreads! Can't wait to actually read it! By the way Aleks, thanks for the recommend on your novel--got it from Kindle last night and am starting today--hooray!

    Need I say--I'm in--thank you!

(Look who finally remembered her email--never say I'm not a quick learner--hey 3 days is not too long a learning curve!)

  5. Sarah - yes, it was a gem that was a bit wasted, as you can buy short stories only on Torquere's website (to my knowledge) - but many people buy their books elsewhere. So we figured this story definitely deserves a second shot at "life" as it were. :)

    Tracy D. - I hope it'll make you laugh, too. :)

Tracy - yep. Nothing like a deep belly laugh to brighten the day.

  6. I think humorous vampire stories are my favorite (although I like the dark, hot kind too!), and I look forward to this one, since I seem to have missed it the first time around.

  7. Aleks,
the story looks wonderful. Count me in as someone who will be reading it as soon as I can.And of course enter me in the contest thingy...still the same email addy.

  8. Vamps at the dentist...cracks me up, LOL. That right there is worth the price of admission. ;-p

  9. I have to admit to having fun writing a pretend blurb for this cover on GR as well. Sounds like lots of fun. =)

  13. This is one that had me looking forward to it from the start. I haven't read any of Storm Grant's books although I will be soon! I love being able to laugh while reading, although I must say I love a story that is well written enough to make me cry as well.

  14. Industry professionals are always telling me humor is a hard sell, that nobody wants to read it.

So I'm wildly pleased by all these supportive comments saying they are looking forward to SUCKS & BLOWS. I only hope I don't disappoint.

Thank you all for playing here today.
    ~ Storm

  16. LMAO this looks like it will be fun.

  17. As someone who hates going to the dentist I am looking forward to finding some humor in the sitch. :)
Who knows, maybe I'll be pitching Sucks & Blows to my dentist when I end up having to explain why I can't keep the grin off my face as he's coming at me with the drill. :)
Looking forward to this and each and every other roll of the tide.

  18. I meant com.... (dot)com
