Riptide Party Day 8: Rachel Haimowitz and Dark Soul #1 by Aleksandr Voinov

Well, here we are, day 8. Last day of the party. I've been so excited for the last week, so many books of awesome coming, my little explosions have rocked me a bit. But, I have to admit, as excited as I am for the ALL the Riptide books of uber awesome, it's this badboy, this is the one that sends my grabby hands into hyper-drive.  Those of you that know me won't be surprised by that. It's a good thing this is day 8's book, I'm a lot more subdued today from all the jumping around this week. Worn myself plum out, I have. If this was day 1's book... my claymore and hand grenade explosions would have scared people 3 states away.  I'm sure of it. However instead of me going off, or rambling on endlessly about his upcoming awesomeness like I usually do, I'll let Rachel do it.

Before I run off,  a reminder or two. Make sure you come back tomorrow, the party may be over, but the blog tour actually begins. Aleks, Rachel and Chris are coming by for a sit down here at mah Place. I'll be throwing questions at them about the awesome that is Riptide, and... all the giveaway winners will be announced as well.  And, if I'm not mistaken, tomorrow the pre-orders are available. Hmm *looks around* I'd best fondle these beautimus covers one more time and make sure they will all get to the right place.

I still have soooo much to do to get ready! Gianormous blog tour coming your way. All of the Riptide authors will be coming to visit me :D  I'll be doing interviews, book reviews, even some of the characters are coming to visit... all kinds of fun stuff. And many many more giveaways. W00T! Blog tour of awesome.

Must get the Place in order.

While I'm off doing that, I give you the fantabulous Rachel Haimowitz... and Dark Soul by Aleksandr Voinov.

eBook release: Oct 30 2011
Word count: ≈20,000
Page count: ≈70
SeriesDark Soul
Heat Wave: 5 - Very explicit love scenes
Erotic Frequency: 3 - Moderate
Type: Part of a Series
Blurb:  Stefano Marino is a made man, a happily married West Coast mafia boss who travels east to await the death of a family patriarch. All the old hands have gathered—of course sharks will circle when there’s blood in the water—but it’s a new hand that draws Stefano’s eye.

Silvio “the Barracuda” Spadaro is protetto and heir to retired consigliere Gianbattista Falchi, and a made man in his own right. Among his underworld family, being gay is a capital crime, but the hypersexual—and pansexual—young killer has never much cared for rules. The only orders he follows are Battista’s, whether on the killing field or on his knees, eagerly submissive at Battista’s feet.

But Silvio has needs Battista can’t fill, and he’s cast his black-eyed gaze on Stefano. A fake break-in, and even faker attack, and Silvio is exactly where he wants to be: strung up at Stefano’s mercy, driving the older Mafioso toward urges he’s spent his whole life repressing. Stefano resists, but when the Russian mob invades his territory and forces him to seek aid, Gianbattista’s price brings Stefano face to face once more with Silvio—and his darkest desires.

Rachel Haimowitz talks Dark Soul

The Dark Soul series does belong to one of the Riptide partners, but don’t think that’s why we bought it. In fact, we all decided early on that our own works would suffer the same rigorous editorial review everyone else’s does—and we even brought on a well-respected editor to make sure that happens (we have kaboshed one story among us already, in fact).

No, the reason I bought Dark Soul was because it embodies all the things I think Aleksandr Voinov does best: it’s gritty, shameless, and completely unapologetic. Aleks has this remarkable ability to fill his worlds with morally ambiguous—and sometimes downright morally corrupt—characters with whom he somehow makes you sympathize utterly. His characters are rapists, murderers, torturers, criminals . . . and you don’t care. You root for them. You want them to be happy.

Dark Soul was no different. The star of this series is a broken, broken young man—an emotionally crippled Mafioso named Silvio Spadaro. Make no mistake, he’s as cold-blooded a killer as they come. Yet he lives by his own moral code, and he upholds it. Aleks draws you to him like a compulsion, peels back all the layers and lets you see both the rotten and the pure inside him. He makes you want to fix Silvio. He makes you hurt when Silvio hurts, and makes your heart surge when Silvio finds joy.

On top of everything else, the Dark Soul series is essentially a catalog of every secret dirty desire you might ever have had: gun porn, incest, crossdressing gangbangs . . . you name it, it’s probably in there. And it’s HOT. Silvio sees his body as a weapon, nothing more, which means he has no more qualms about posing as a transvestite hooker (and sleeping with four guys in the process) to reach his prey as he does about killing said prey when the time comes.

Aleks manages to accomplish all this with a true economy of prose. His men are all traditionally quite manly men on the surface—they don’t talk about their feelings, they don’t profess their undying love, they don’t vocalize their hurts—yet somehow you gain a clear understanding of what makes them tick. You comprehend their motives, incredibly complex though they often are. You empathize. You desperately want them to have their happily ever after. Will they, though? Well, you’ll have to read to find out.

Today's giveaway…

Backlist book of choice:  Aleksandr Voinov (excluding Counterpunch) or Rachel Haimowitz - Backlist book of choice (excluding Crescendo).

The fine details...

One last thing...

Thanks to all that came to the party this week. Thanks to all the Riptide authors, and both Rachel and Aleks as well. Chris too *waves* Hi Chris. :)

All of you... rocked my sox. Hard. You all made this silly little blog girl just grin ear to ear each day this week. You all rock.

That's all for me, for now.

Later taters!

  1. Last day of the party? :( Tomorrow we can follow the blog tour and pre-order? Yippee! :D
Aleks's novels do tend to be on the dark and gritty side, exploring the darker side of humanity, but they are so well written and crafted that they are irresistible! I love his writing and look forward to reading more!

Thank you Amara for hosting this fabulous party, along with all the authors who have participated, especially Rachel and Aleks! You're all amazing! :)

  3. This is becoming a habit...

(although to be *completely* honest I'm having a hard time with anything falling out of the "light and fluffy" category right now. Hopefully I'll be beyond that by the end of next month.)

WV -- truit Ugh, makes me think fish. And I really HATE fish -- think I've seen too many with they eyes still attached (tho I do enjoy watching them swim; I miss the Seattle aquarium...)

  7. @SueM: Yep, last day of the party. :( But the blog tour is full of awesome. I'm vera excited. I get to sit down and interview each author and all kinds of fun stuff. :D And lots more giveaways too :D :D w00T! I'm so glad you enjoyed the party. Thank you sooo much for coming to hang this week :D

@BL0226: I'm so in love with this cover. And it's just perfect for Silvio's book. Perfect.

@Tracykitn: Ha! I like your habit. ;) Aleks has a bit of everything. That's one of the things I love about him. Maybe check out Transit. From what I hear it's the light (dare I say fluffy?) one. I've not read it myself, but I hear good things. :)

BTW, eww, I hate fish too. Iz icky.

Hi Dawn, thanks for coming by. I hope the blog wasn't why you weren't able to comment. :( Sometimes it does get hinky like that, sorry if it gave you any trouble.

@Maria: Oh yeah, Mafia. Mmmmm. I love it too. :D And Aleks will be doing 3 Dark Soul books before the year is out, big W00T! :D Thanks for coming to the party m'dear.

@Mickie: Hiya. Thanks for coming by today :D

Thanks everyone. Hope you have a great day!

  8. Everytime I read a blurb for one of Aleks' books, I tell myself "That's too dark for me, I need something happier." So I hee and haw and put off reading it until I succumb to peer pressure (and lots of teasing bits of information about it from friends) and read it. And then I enjoy it thoroughly.

This seems to be going along the same lines, because I'm excited for another Aleks book, but the topic doesn't sound like something I'd dig. But I know I'm going to anyway. I think Aleks (or at least his books) is great at showing us all the darker parts of our psyche.

    ReplyDelete
  9. LOL Same for me Alex.

At this point, I've given up thinking I even know what I want to read about or what I may or may not like. At this point... I just let Aleks show me what I really like to read. I see a new book, I don't question it, I rush for it, read it, love it, then email him a big... "OMG that was awesome, what have you done to me" email. It's become a cycle. It's so vera odd to me how his books do that to me. *shrugs* But they've been doing that to me since I found him after reading SF. Didn't think I'd like that either. Hell, I was reading fluffy m/f back then. Oh how times have changed.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I *have* read Transit, actually, and it *almost* qualifies as "light and fluffy" but what I'm reading lately has the mental nutritional content of candyfloss (which, as a word, on the whole, I love SO MUCH BETTER than saying cotton candy. It's just...fluffier. And my head is very fluffy lately.)

WV: cries (because this is the last day of the pre-party?)

    ReplyDelete
  11. @SueM: Oh, but it’s only the start of the really huge blog tour and treasure hunt. (And by then, you’ll even be able to pre-order. :) )

Thanks! I’ve tried to write one “nicer” book and I got a lot of criticism for that (from my regular readers). Seems there are a few people that want exactly what I write, so I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing. It’s natural for me, all that darkness is irresistible (to me, anyway). And thanks for your support, it really helps when we feel overwhelmed.

TracyD: Thanks! Personally, that is My Cover Of The Year – any publisher. Jordan Taylor captured the story just brilliantly.

Tracy – Hey, it’s still going to be hot and fun. :)

Mickie – thanks for stopping by!

Dawn – Very soon! We can’t wait to start putting books out there. They are all lined up and ready (apart from the few that aren’t yet, but that’s just a few), and we’re extremely thrilled with them. We can’t wait to put them in readers’ hands (and, err, e-readers).

Maria – it’s a slightly romantic version of the mafia (more Godfather than Sopranos), but the power play and traditions is what I found so intriguing. And I just can’t resist Silvio.

Amara – thanks for having us again, dear. And that during your birthday week, too!

Alex – I do hope it’s own of those “I really didn’t expect to like it” books. I seem to be good at those. :)

Amara – you’re thoroughly corrupted, and it’s great fun corrupting you.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Tracy - yep, I meant "Transit". It's the lightest and fluffiest anybody can ever expect from me. I just don't have it in me. Writing light and fluffy is a talent - many people love that. I'm just incapable of it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @tracykitn: Nope, no crying for the last day of the party, because the fun is just beginning! Huge awesome blog tour starting. And all the Riptide authors are coming to hang out with me for days at a time. And some of the characters too. *whispers* and lots more giveaways and even hugeamous ones too :D :D This party... just a teaser party ;-p

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Aleks: You're so very welcome. Thank YOU all so much for letting me host your party. Best birthday week evah. :D

Lolol, I am so thoroughly corrupted. And loving it! *tips hat* Nicely done sir. Here's to much more corruption in the future! *cheers*

    :D :D

  15. Wow...this series sounds sooo incredible, I can't wait! Someone, somehow, somewhere converted me to an Aleks fan! *glares at Amara* Of course, the man himself makes it easy to love him! Again, congrats to all of you involved in RipTide...you have much to be proud of!!

(burapst? what in the heck is a burapst???)

    ReplyDelete
  16. SusieQ_too: LOLOLOL! I'll gladly take that hit. Not sorry. ;-p

*whispers* wait until you meet Silvio here. All I can say right now is... OMFG!

burapst? IDK. I need better veriword thingies. I need to have a word with the veriword folks. I want cool ones.

  17. @Aleks -- the thing about light and fluffy is that it's easy. And my brain is fried. And everytime I pick up something that you wrote, it attempts to engage my brain, and there's a part of me that cheering like mad, and then there's a part of me that wants to just go back to bed and say "Nope. No. Thinking is just Too Much on top of all the rest of it." And MOST of the time I just soldier on and read it anyway, but every once in a while it's overwhelming and I go back to light and fluffy. Which frequently means reading the same two picture books over and over and OVER again to the 6YO. Who should be able to read them to himself now.

And I really did enjoy Transit.

@Amara -- I don' usually like parties, 'cause I don't know hardly ANYONE and I'm starting to feel comfortable at this one, and it means I'm going to have to get out there and *interact* with other people I don't know as well. I need someone to walk along with me and hold my hand. *flutters eyelashes* any takers? I offer up baked goods.

And, yeah. New VeriWords. Right now, I've got "apeninas" and I'm just all "Huh? WTH?" and shaking my head...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Woot, thanks to everyone for stopping by again today, and for partying with us all week! And an extra special thanks to Amara for being such a wonderful host; I didn't know there was gonna be an open bar! :D

As for this book? U guise, srsly. Srsly, u guise. READ IT. I think in terms of quality and flow of prose that it's by far the best Aleks has ever written. (In terms of story and character I think it's a tie for best, right alongside Counterpunch, which, also, u guise, srsly, READ IT.)

And that unbelievably gorgeous cover art was done by Jordan Taylor, and I agree with Aleks: I think it's the photo cover of the year. Not just at Riptide but of anything I've seen anywhere so far. I try to be a good mommy and love all our covers equally, but that one is just . . . WOW.

  23. Aww, I'm always too late, but it doesn't mean that I can't comment on previous entries any more :).

I know what you mean by saying that Aleks' books are somehow dark in nature. I remember when I read Soldiers for the first time. I couldn't believe that I wish happiness for such people. And when I read the second part. I had to take a break - I stood in the shower thinking about characters. For the first time, a book evoke such feelings in me.

Therefore, I'm really looking forward to reading Dark Soul. Besides, the blurb in itself sounds amazing.

Thank you, Amara, for organizing Riptide Party :).
