Interview & Giveaway: Andrea Speed talks Pretty Monsters

My stop for the Riptide Tide Blog Tour week #3 brings Andrea Speed to come hang at the Place. W00T! She's here all week with her upcoming Riptide release Pretty Monsters. As with the previous weeks, there is a weekly giveaway (listed at the end of each post) and all comments are entered into the end of tour blog giveaway (info here) as well as the Riptide Grand Prize eReader giveaway. Double W00T!

To kick things off, a little sit down.

Amara:  Hi Andrea, welcome to my Place. I’m so excited that you’re here. *smiles* Thanks for coming to sit and chat with me.  To start, please tell me a little bit about yourself.

Andrea: I'm a big old nerd who never met a pop culture reference she didn't like.

Amara:  *chuckles* Nice. Tell me about your upcoming release with Riptide.

Andrea: Well, it's a short story for now. Pretty Monsters (Josh of the Damned #1) kicks off a series about Josh, a guy who works the overnight shift at a convenience store adjacent to a hell vortex. So long with the usual customers, he has to juggle the odd zombie, lizard guy, and other unusual creatures. It seems the need for midnight snacks is a great unifier between species.

Amara:  *laughs* That’s awesome.  Who doesn’t love a good midnight snack.  So how’s it been working with Riptide?

Andrea: It's been great! They have been fabulous to work with. I couldn't ask for better people. (Now, please, ask them to put away the bullwhips. I'll be good!)

Amara:  *laughs* I’ll do it, although I hear they like to play with whips so… *winks*

Ok, please tell us, in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

Andrea: Because it is a hell of a lot of fun.

Amara:  *nods* Indeed it was. So do you have any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

Andrea:  Yes! More in the Josh of The Damned series (#2 will be called Peek A Boo), and a fantasy novel called Strange Angels.

Amara:  Oh YAY *smiles* Now, how about a little about you. I’m curious, who or what inspired you to become an author?

Andrea: The easy answer is my grandmother, who was a writer herself. She published one children's book, but for most of her life, before and after that, she was a struggling writer. You'd think that would have discouraged me, but it didn't.

Amara: Well, I’m glad it didn’t. So, I know several authors like to listen to music while they write, how about you. Do you listen to music when you write?

Andrea: I do. I even create little soundtracks I post on 8tracks or Spotify. You can find links on my blog, if you're interested in having a listen. I love inflicting … I mean sharing … my musical tastes with others.

Amara:  Ha! That’s awesome. I actually do that when my faves share what they’re listening too while they write. I snatch them up and make my own little soundtracks. *grins* Totally floats my boat.  Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

Andrea: There will be a soundtrack for Pretty Monsters (and Josh of the Damned as a whole), so settling on one song would be really difficult. But I suppose you can pick your favorite out of these three: “Pinhead” by The Ramones, “Little Bones” by The Tragically Hip, or “Bury Us Alive” by Starfucker.

Amara:  *nods* Cool. If a movie was made about your book, who would you want to play the lead role?

Andrea: Ooh. Well, for Josh of The Damned, that might be a tough call, as I want a younger guy who's kind of cute, but could still pass for an average guy if mussed up a little and put in a polyester smock. Maybe Bobby Steggert or Hugh Dancy.

Amara:  Mmmmm, yum. Ok, how about this one…*grins* … If you were an animal, which one would you be?

Andrea: Does it have to be real? If real, probably a tiger, because they're attractive, and they could pop your skull like a balloon. If fictional, I want to be a gryphon, because I could fly as well as pop people's skulls like balloons.

Amara:  *laughs* Soooo, I’m getting the feeling you want to be able to pop skulls… that friggin’ rocks. *big grin*

What TV show/movie/book do you watch or read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?

Andrea: Wipeout. People making fools of themselves for money, and possibly getting hurt for our entertainment. Shameful. I still watch it, though. Damn it.

Amara:  Ha! I love those shows, they crack me up. If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

Andrea: Future, because I want to see if humanity ever gets its act together or not.

Amara:  *nods* yeah, me too. If you could have any superpower what would you choose and why?

Andrea: I want the ability to completely warp reality, and shape it as I see fit. Because that would be fun.

Amara:  Oh, that would be fun.  Alright, tell me this… you have won one million dollars, what’s the first thing that you would buy?

Andrea: Knowing me, a tricked out computer.

Amara:  If your characters were cake, candy, cookie or… I don’t know… dessert…what kind would they be?

Andrea: Josh would be a chocolate chip cookie, Colin would be a mysterious foil wrapped candy found in a fancy box, Roan would be black and tan ice cream, Paris would be a gold leaf covered dark chocolate, and Holden would be a caramel apple with a razor blade in it.

Amara:  *laughs* That rocks.  Who is your favorite fictional villain?

Andrea: I love the aliens from the Alien movie series. Okay, not a single villain as such, but they are awesome. And if you ever see the mother Alien at the Science Fiction Museum, you will agree with me. Gorgeously grotesque and relentlessly horrible.

Amara:  Oh, they are awesome. Who is your favorite fictional hero?

Andrea: Wolverine! Goddamn it, I can't shake my love of him, even though I should.

Amara:  OMG I love him. Love Love LOVE.  Damn sexy that one is. NOM.  So darlin’, if you came with a warning label, what would it be?

Andrea: Unstable Under Pressure.

Amara:  *chuckles* I resemble that one too. So Andrea m’dear, where can we find you online?

Amara:  *smiles* That was fun. Thanks so much for coming to my Place and chatting with me!
