Blurb: Performing before a crowd of thousands? No problem. Baring his heart before a crowd of one? Better tie him down first.Broadway darling Nicky Avery is a shooting star by night, but by day he bounces from one heartless one-night stand to the next. A quick flogging, a rough lay, a new whip-hand to manipulate—yet still he yearns for something he cannot even name.

He finds his first true hint of satisfaction in Devon Turner, a self-possessed film star and expert Dom. Devon knows what he wants the moment he sees it, and what he wants is Nicky Avery. Nicky’s never learned to trust and has a nasty habit of topping from the bottom, but he learns fast that in the bedroom, Devon won’t tolerate his actor’s masks.

Nicky's a broken boy, but Devon knows exactly how to put his new sub back together. With patience, care, and all the punishments his little pain slut can handle, Devon breaks Nicky down one scene at a time, revealing a mind that yearns to trust and a heart that hungers for the ecstasy of true submission at last.

My Thoughts:

My Review: 5/5

Wow. I’m really not sure what to say about this book. I’m pretty well stuck at… wow.

I’ve tried to read several BDSM books, but none have really rung my bell. Truthfully, I’ve given up because more often than not D/s books just seems like another story of asshole tortures whipping boy to me. I read this one mainly because Rachel Haimowitz is a favorite of mine I consider an autobuy. I’d also heard she writes a better BDSM book than most and I was curious to see what that meant.

Master Class is the prequel to Sublime: Collected shorts. It’s the story of Devon and Nicky’s meeting, and it gave me exactly what I needed after reading Sublime. It gave me how they met, but more important to me, it gave me some understanding to the characters and their relationship.

As with all the Rachel Haimowitz books I’ve read, the writing is fabulous. The characters were engaging; deep, their relationship I can only think to call… intense. I loved how the book gave me the perspective from both Devon and Nicky’s side and gave me insight and understanding of the dynamics of their relationship.  I must admit, I was a little worried in the beginning as I found the opening scenes rather brutal. It begins with a harsh scene that quite frankly left me thinking Devon was a complete ass and questioning if I’d be able to understand or connect with Nicky. However I’ve read enough by this author to know she wouldn’t leave me there and I was not disappointed. When I finished, I found myself sitting with a wide eyed stare, stuck at … wow.

Master Class was a fabulous read that packs quite a punch for such a short book.  Now I’m all grabby hands and anxious for more of Devon and Nicky, so much so I may even re-read Sublime to see how it fits now that I’ve read the prequel.

Bottom line:  Highly recommended.

Warnings:   This is  heavy BDSM. Very much NOT BDSM lite. Not in the least bit.

  1. I've noticed, that stories, that leave it's readers with monosyllabic reactions, are worth reading. :)

  2. I agree with your assessment on BDSM fic as a whole, but that does make it sweeter when you find a really good one :)

  3. I haven't read many BDSM novels and look forward on how Rachel handles it.  I have no doubt, it will be worth the read.

  4. Definitely worth reading. As I put in my GoodReads review, I had an epiphany moment regaring "topping from the bottom" while reading this story - it's spelled out so well in who Nicky is and Devon having to break him of that.  I'd heard the term before and had the general idea, but nothing made me stab at the "page" before and go "That! OMG, THAT!" before reading this story.  It's SO worth the read for BDSM fans or those truly curious about many aspects of BDSM but not wanting to try it for fear of reading something that isn't accurate. This is AWESOME! (<-- sings it the way Amara usually does.)

(And I own everything from Rachel's backlist now, so no need to enter me in the backlist contest.)

  5. Nice review :) I agree with the initial scene making me growl. Humiliation scenes really irk me, but having read Sublime, I knew it had to get better. I'm going to have to re-read Master Class before I write my review, but I have a question...

I don't really remember a rape fantasy happening, do you? (No need to say the specific scene, lest we spoil)

(I own everything [except for the excluded items] so no need to enter me into that prize)

  6. I considered the early scene a rape fantasy, even if they hadn't talked it out to be that beforehand. It was just so . . . Er, yeah, don't want to spoil, but I thought it was a good tag to have because the scene is potentially triggery.

  8. Okay, that makes sense. It just didn't play out like any other rape fantasy scenes I've seen (and I generally dislike rape fantasy scenes, so it allll makes sense).

Better to be cautious than not, especially with the heavy content of the book *sage nod*
