Blog Tour ~ Power Play: Awakening by Rachel Haimowitz and Cat Grant

W00T W00T! The fantabulous Rachel Haimowitz and Cat Grant are hanging out today with Power Play: Awakening and another lesson in...

toys :D

They've also brought another giveaway with them, so be sure to check out the details at the end of the post and take a moment to say howdy. :D

Welcome back darlins!

Thank you for joining us on the Power Play: Awakening virtual release tour! *throws penis-shaped confetti borrowed from Anne Tenino* No party is complete without favors, so we'll be giving away winner’s choice of one backlist book from Cat or Rachel to one lucky commenter from this blog at the end of the tour. We'll also be giving away a lovely custom chainmail bracelet with a silver padlock clasp (handmade by our lovely hostess Amara) to one lucky commenter drawn from all the tour stops, so follow along and party with us at each--you can earn an entry at every stop!

Greetings, all! Today we’re taking a look at all the kinky delights that await you (and Jonathan’s not-so-submissive sub, Brandon) in Awakening . . .

Let’s start with a couple of basic back-door toys. Our sadistic yet playful Dom Jonathan has a fondness for anal play, as well as an interest in keeping Brandon ready to service him at all times. This black silicone butt plug is relatively average-sized (and believe me, they come MUCH bigger!), which makes it a good training plug for a new submissive.

Jonathan’s San Francisco penthouse contains a well-equipped dungeon, with an wide variety of kinky toys, including this handy-dandy fucking machine.

Jonathan prefers to restrain Brandon in a standing position (usually cuffed to a suspension bar in the dungeon ceiling) and turn the machine on its base to use it on him while he keeps his hands and mouth occupied on other areas of Brandon’s body.

(I’m kind of envious of Brandon – er, almost . . .)

Most subs need to get that pesky gag reflex trained out of them – and of course, Jonathan has the perfect toy for that, too. This rubber penis gag has a convenient strap for fastening around the sub’s head. (Bonus points for that quality silent time!)

About halfway through Awakening, Jonathan takes Brandon to his luxurious beach house in Big Sur. One day he hands Brandon the car keys and sends him out on an errand to test his concentration and resolve. Of course, Jonathan has no intention of making it easy on him, so he gives Brandon a distraction – namely, this remote-control vibrating egg. (And yes, it goes exactly where the butt plug goes – but not at the same time!)

He also locks this little silicone cage around Brandon’s junk. It’s called The Punisher for a very good reason – those are tiny spikes on the inside (also made of silicone, but excruciating nonetheless) to discourage the wearer from becoming excited. Which proves quite a challenge with the vibrating egg going off at irregular intervals!

The Big Sur house has no dungeon, so Brandon takes it upon himself to build some equipment for a very special scene Jonathan has planned. A St. Andrew’s cross (named for a Roman Catholic saint crucified on a cross in this particular shape) is fairly standard equipment in most dungeons. They’re made of sturdy wooden struts joined in an “X,” with fastening points for the sub’s wrists and ankles, as pictured here:

Mild though they might appear, these rubber-tipped clothespins are nasty little toys that actually hurt more coming off than going on. (Imagine the pins-and-needles sensation of blood rushing back into a numb limb and multiply it by a hundred, and you’ll get an idea how much they hurt.)

In fact, rubber anything is the most severe kind of toy in any sadist’s arsenal – and Jonathan, hardcore sadist that he is, doesn’t stop with clothespins. This rubber flogger can turn a sub’s skin red with hardly any effort, and burns like napalm with every stroke.

Needless to say, Brandon only gets the business end of this bad boy when he’s been an exceptionally bad boy himself. J

Brandon McKinney is a man reborn. Newly awakened to the notion of consensual power exchange and the submissive urges inside him, he begs for a second chance from the man who opened his eyes to this world: Silicon Valley superstar Jonathan Watkins. But no birth is absent pain, and Brandon’s is no exception. He fears he’s not strong enough to see it through.

Jonathan knows better. He’s seen the iron core inside his new submissive, and the wounded heart inside him too. He means to teach Brandon to heal the one with the other. They have five months left on their contract, after all, and Jonathan has done more with less before.

It’s tough to stay objective, though, when you’re falling in love. Shame Brandon doesn’t feel the same. He’s only there for the three-million-dollar payout at contract’s end—a fact that Jonathan, nursing his own wounded heart, reminds himself of each day. For even as Brandon’s barriers break and his mind expands, even as he grows to love his place at Jonathan’s feet, he’ll never love life with a sadist—especially one who cannot escape the public eye.

About the authors:
Rachel Haimowitz is an M/M erotic romance author, a freelance writer and editor, and the Managing Editor of Riptide Publishing. She's also a sadist with a pesky conscience, shamelessly silly, and quite proudly pervish. Fortunately, all those things make writing a lot more fun for her . . . if not so much for her characters.
When she's not writing about hot guys getting it on (or just plain getting it; her characters rarely escape a story unscathed), she loves to read, hike, camp, sing, perform in community theater, and glue captions to cats. She also has a particular fondness for her very needy dog, her even needier cat, and shouting at kids to get off her lawn.
You can find Rachel at her website, Tweeting as RachelHaimowitz, chatting in the Goodreads forums, and blogging at Fantasy Unbound. She loves to hear from folks, so feel free to drop her a line anytime at metarachel (at) gmail (dot) com.

EPIC Award–winning author Cat Grant lives by the sea in beautiful Monterey, California, with one persnickety feline and entirely too many books and DVDs. When she's not writing, she sings along (badly!) to whatever's on her iPod shuffle, watches lots of movies, and fantasizes about kinky sex with Michael Fassbender.

  1. A friend of mine has a small rubber (I think) flogger - the stands are much thinner than the one pictured. Very 'stingy' feel to it and yes, it does mark the skin very quickly.
My partners looked at it and very quickly said 'no'...thuddy ones yes, but not nasty, whippy, stingy ones .
Plus side of being a switch...they will use it on me :)

  2. An eye opening ( or watering?!) post - this series gets more interesting each time i see a blog post of it!

  3. Holy crap! A rubber flogger is yet to come?! Did Brandon screw up so badly in China? *grins* Ooohh, the anticipation!

And, Amara, that chainmail looks incredibly gorgeous! ^^

  4. This one takes place in the Bay Area? Definitely something in its favor! Interesting that rubber equipment causes the most pain...is it because of the snap-back factor, or because some people are sensitive to the material? Hmm.

  5. I love the funny way you presented the info about the toys! This was a great post and I am already enjoying the tour! The bracelet is lovely so I hope I win! Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. @ pointycat - I like the way you think! I'm a bit of a pain slut myself (stop laughing, Rachel!), although I need a good warmup before I can take being smacked with a rubber flogger.

@ Suze - Glad you're enjoying the blog tour!

@ Aija - Oh, you have NO IDEA what's in store for Bran in China - or rather, once he gets on the plane! Bwahahaha!

@ vitajex - The beginning of the book is set in San Francisco, but we soon send the boys traveling to Big Sur, then China. Kink all around the world! :)

@ Juliana - Aw, thanks! I LOVE writing about toys. (You should see my flogger collection!)

Thanks for dropping by, everyone! Good luck with the giveaway. :)

My pleasure darlin'. I love having you guys :D

  14. The bracelet is gorgeous, Amara. I wish I knew how to make jewelry.

I love the pics of their toys. I think they help the reader visualize the story. I must admit that the first time I read a BDSM story I didn't know what a St Andrews Cross was. That was a long time ago. I will neither confirm or deny that I have seen one in real life. ;-)

    1. LOL! I will neither confirm nor deny I've seen ANY of these things IRL... *whistles innocently* ;-)
