Oh, We Adore Reunited Lovers
By Katie Porter
Nate and Kyle from Came Upon a Midnight Clear have a long past that isn’t all blossoms, spun-sugar and hot sex. Their history is full of pain and youthful pride. Nate wound up in jail. Each man lost the love of his life.
If this were real life, the story might end there. Just a sad series of events that lead to men who harbor years of regret.
Ha! We write romance, of course. That means when we talk about reunited lovers, we do so with smiles of anticipation. There will be drama, old heartaches, possibly new lovers, changes in life circumstances, and of course a rekindling of a flame that never really went out.
I think this theme works especially well when the reunited lovers were young and inexperienced when they first fell in love and subsequently parted. How would boys of only seventeen have the skills to rescue a failing relationship, express their youthful hurts, share their vulnerable expectations, and survive the huge road bump that is transitioning from adolescence to adulthood? In this case, they don’t.
So…big misunderstanding? Nothing so simple! They barely understood themselves, let alone how their actions hurt one another. Years later, as grown men, they need to leave the excuses of their youth behind and learn what it’s like to love—really, honestly love—as adults.
I hope I’m not spoiling anything by saying that there’s a happy ending, with a hefty dose of Christmas happiness.
Oh, and reunited lovers also equals hot sex. Lots of it. After all, if the passion hasn’t died…where else is it going to go? They parted as angry young men and they reunite as angry men experienced in how to make each other crazy. Those were fun, fun scenes to write—even if some of them turned bittersweet.
Kyle had given his all to scramble Nate’s brains, to provide a release the man wouldn’t be able to forget when their gazes met the next morning. Both of them breathed as if they’d run five miles flat out. Sweat soaked the back of Kyle’s shirt.
He chuckled. “Can I let go now?”
To his surprise, Nate smiled and nuzzled his neck. “Yes, you may.”
Laughter shook from one panting chest into the other. Back and forth. That trade of satisfaction that never got old.
Kyle released the pool table and stretched his fingers. He did what he’d wanted to do in the midst of their wild time. He looped his arm back around Nate’s neck and pulled him around for a kiss. Gentler now, spent, but powerful in different ways. They’d always been their most vulnerable in these moments after the passion was sated. That was when they’d made quiet, nighttime promises.
Those promises never quite made it to the light of day.
Before Kyle could travel too far down that dark road, Nate swept damp hair back from his temple. “But now the party’s over.”
Happy holidays, everyone!
